The last artist in my trio of American illustrators is Austrian-born Printmaker Helen Siegl, who began her artistic career in her home city of Vienna during the turbulent years of World War II. Many European art-makers of her generation were embittered by their wartime experiences, but Siegl's religious beliefs helped her transcend the horrors of the past and create art celebrating the wonders of creation, the joy of community, and the mysteries of faith. She emigrated to North America in the early 1950s, married, and settled down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Siegl was known for her woodcuts in an expressionistic, folk art style, illustrating numerous collections of stories, poems, and Christmas carols. You can now view original prints, book illustrations, and clip-art offerings by this remarkable artist of faith in the newly added Helen Siegl profile page in the Sacred Artists section. Her simply-rendered images of the Nativity welcome us into the Advent Season. (John Kohan)
