Pictures in Focus: Two Advent Engravings by Albert Decaris

This week's Advent-themed art offerings are two prints by French Master Engraver Albert Decaris just added to the gallery of his sacred art profile page. One work is a wood engraving for a Christmas card of a traditional Nativity scene with Mary, Joseph, and the Christ Child in the manger, an unusual print from a graphic artist who preferred to work with copper plates. The second engraving from a metal plate, known with a touch of irony as The Madonna of Siena, shows a barefoot mother and infant, making their way alone towards the city of Siena, which stretches out before them in all its splendor. This humble Madonna with child, balanced precariously on her shoulder, is a world apart from the sumptuously enthroned Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus of Maesta, the world-renowned early 14th century altarpiece by Duccio, once enshrined in the Siena Cathedral on the top of the hill to the right of the scene.
