There is a new oil on panel painting by American Artist Edward Knippers on view in the image gallery of his profile page in the Sacred Artists section. In Christ and the Demoniac, Knippers depicts Jesus, reaching out to heal the man, possessed with a legion of demons, who lived among tombs, a miracle recorded in Mark 5: 1-20. Knippers grounds his figurative art in the theology of the Incarnation, presenting his subjects in the nude to show how God glorified the body, when God took on human flesh to redeem humankind. The full-blooded, dynamic figure of Christ contrasts with the gray-toned, brooding form of the demon-possessed man. His languid posture mimics the figure of Adam, receiving the spark of life from God in the famous Sistine Chapel ceiling fresco by Michelangelo--only this sad figure in shadow represents humanity after the Fall. Now, Christ, the Second Adam, has burst on the scene to bring healing and new life to the demoniac, sending shock waves through the fallen grave stones and ruined sepulchres. (John Kohan)
