Picture in Focus: Three Crosses in a Landscape by Fernando Bimonte

This week's featured artwork is a mixed media painting on wood by Fernando Bimonte, now displayed in the image gallery of his profile page in the Sacred Artists section. The resident saintmaker at New Mexico's pilgrim shrine in Chimayo has gone off in a striking new direction in this abstract study of three thinly-painted crosses, set against a swirling background in yellow, orange, red, olive, and brown--the colors of the weathered hills of the American Southwest. Bimonte's Three Crosses in a Landscape brings to mind the series of cross paintings Georgia O'Keeffe made on a visit to New Mexico in 1929. (John Kohan)
