During the Season of Lent, I posted an image of a hammered metal crucifix by Haitian Artist Michee Ramil Remy in the Crosses & Crucifixes page of the Schools of Sacred Art section. I was saddened to hear that Remy died last month at the age of 41. Those who would like to know more about Remy's special form of hammered metal work can now visit a page on Haitian Oil Drum Art in the Schools of Sacred Art section. Artisans in Croix-des-Bouquets, a market town just northeast of the Haitian capital of Port-du-Prince have found an artful way to recycle 55 gallon oil drums by cutting and flattening out the barrels and using hammers, chisels, and nails to create decorative sculptures and embossed bas-relief panels. Religious themes are a favorite of Haitian oil drum artists, who combine traditional Roman Catholic imagery with Voodoo motifs. You can find delightful images of angels, the Garden of Eden, Noah's ark, and scenes from the Christmas story in the image gallery of this new page. (John Kohan)
