Art in Focus: Cuban Graphic Art

The next stop on my sacred art tour of the Americas is the Communist state of Cuba, famous among print collectors for its striking propaganda poster art. The Caribbean island nation had a vibrant graphic art scene before the 1959 Revolution brought Fidel Castro to power. Interesting illustrations on sacred subjects were made in a distinctive Cuban Art Deco style for leading publications. Religion was supposed to wither away under the Communist regime, but references to traditional sacred art themes like the Passion of Christ can still be found in political placards, cinema posters, and fine art prints, depicted in enigmatic, sardonic, ambivalent, and challenging ways. You can now view a selection of Cuban prints with religious imagery from the Sacred Art Pilgrim in the new Cuban Graphic Art page in the Schools of Sacred Art section (John Kohan)
