Artists in Profile: Richard and Francis Hook

My series on new drawings in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection comes to an end this week with a profile of Richard and Frances Hook, an Americian husband-and-wife team of sacred art illustrators who created a Christ for modern viewers, corresponding more closely to the “personal savior” of Evangelical Christianity. Both of the Hooks began their careers in secular commercial art but turned to the growing inspirational art market in the 1960s, challenging conventional pious portraiture with images of a more masculine, rugged Christ who laughed and doted on children. The couple often worked together on the same drawings with Richard concentrating on the male figures, while Frances blocked out the woman and children. The Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection has recently acquired a series of working sketches on biblical themes by the Hooks now on view in the newly created Richard and Frances Hook profile page in the Sacred Artists section.
