Picture in Focus: Pop Art Crucifix by Jurgen Wolke

And now for something completely different. This week's new art offering from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection for the season of Lent is a brilliantly colored Pop Art Crucifix by German Artist Jurgen Wolke. Best known for his doll house-like “found object” assemblage pieces, Wolke has transformed a manufactured crucifix available at any religious gift shop into a strikingly modern, original image of the Cross as Tree of Life, using vibrant graffito patterns and elementary colors. Heavenly bodies, leafy branches, and budding blooms appear beneath a bright red heart in this bold contemporary make-over of a less-than-memorable mass market devotional object. Wolke's Pop Art Crucifix can now be viewed in the image gallery of the Crosses and Crucifixes listing in the Schools of Sacred Art section. (John Kohan)
