Out & About: Take Up Your Cross Exhibit at St. Peter

Christ took up the cross and went to Golgotha. He called on his followers to do the same. During the season of Lent, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 45 W. Winter Street in Delaware, Ohio, is holding the special art exhibition, Take Up Your Cross. This visual meditation on the theme of bearing the cross features 25 paintings, drawings, prints, and collages by artists from 11 countries. The first half of the exhibition shows Christ carrying the cross and explores its theological meaning in works by German Expressionist Otto Dix, Haitian “Primitive” Painter Gerard Fortune, and American Printmaker Robert Hodgell, among others. The second part of the show depicts individuals or groups who have taken up the cross as an act of self-sacrifice with a specially commissioned painted wood carving from Southern Visionary Artist Carl Dixon. Take Up Your Cross runs through Easter Sunday, March 27. Visitors are invited to see the show on Fridays from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. The exhibit will also be open on Holy Week from Wednesday through Friday from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Individuals and groups are welcome to visit on other days by appointment.
