Picture in Focus: Resurrection Crucifix by Janina Karczewska-Konieczna

Midway through the season of Lent, we journey to Poland for this week's new crucifix from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection. Born in the port city of Gdynia in 1934, Ceramic Artist Janina Karczewska-Konieczna has been making pottery pieces for over 55 years. Since the 1980s, she has devoted herself mostly to religious themes, creating sculptural works for churches and chapels across Poland. Karczewska-Konieczna’s pottery evokes the natural world, the shape of animals and plants, cloud patterns, and the undulating waves of her native Baltic seacoast. The cosmos has been torn in two in her ceramic crucifix in my collection, recalling the parting of the veil in Jerusalem’s Temple. Amid storm and struggle and fluttering cloth, Christ dies on the Cross and rises from the tomb. This new crucifix made from clay can be found on the Crosses and Crucifixes page in the Schools of Sacred Art section. (John Kohan)
