Picture in Focus: "For God So Loved the World" Cross by Binford "Benny" Carter

As we enter Holy Week, I'm concluding my Lenten series on new crosses and crucifixes from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection with a carved wood assemblage sculpture by American Outsider Artist Binford "Benny Carter." The North Carolina-born art-maker created everything from totem poles to birdhouses from whatever he could find in flea markets and yard sales. Raised in a Southern Baptist community, Carter often turned to the Bible for inspiration. At the foot of this sculpture of Christ on the Cross, you can see a pair of dice, recalling the lots the Roman soldiers cast for Christ’s robe and a key-chain skull, reminding us that Golgotha means “Place of the Skull.” Inscribed on the base are the opening words of the much-loved “salvation” passage from John 3: 16 (KJV): “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” This new assemblage crucifix can be found in the Crosses and Crucifixes page in the Schools of Sacred Art section.
