Picture in Focus: Pentecost Sunday Chromolithograph by Jos Speybrouck

May 15th is the date of Pentecost Sunday this year, a feast day marking the birthday of the Church, when the Holy Spirit descended in power on the disciples who had gathered in the Upper Room after the Ascension to await the coming of this Advocate and Comforter promised by Christ. It is another important event in the life of Mary. As the Evangelist Luke tells us in Acts 1:14 (KJV): "[the disciples] continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, with Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren." This week's featured artwork is a chromolithograph for Pentecost Sunday from the Spanish edition of a poster series illustrating the liturgical calendar, which Belgian Art Deco Artist Speybrouck created in the 1930s for the Benedictine Abbaye-de-St.-Andre near Bruges in Belgium. Mary is assigned the central place among the disciples as Mother of the Church, since her willingness to bear the Christ Child opened the way to God's plan of redemption for humanity. This new Marian print can be found on the Jos Speybrouck profile page in the Sacred Artist's section. (John Kohan)
