Picture in Focus: Color Lithograph of the Adoration of the Magi by Karel Oberthor

We return to Eastern Europe for this week's new image of the Adoration of the Magi from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection, a color lithograph from Czech Graphic Artist Karel Oberthor, created as a greeting card for the 1981 holiday season. A gifted cartoonist, Oberthor loved horses and the circus. All this is in evidence in his charming depiction of the coming of the Wise Men to the manger, set in a South Bohemian village, where a delightful confusion reigns. Musicians playing a trumpet and bass greet two of the Kings on their prancing steeds, while gossiping peasant women in headscarves and a child carrying a Christmas tree look on as the third Magi kneels to offer his gift to the Holy Family. Even the stable has been made over in the Rustic Baroque style common to this area of Czechia. This new small format lithograph of the Nativity can be found in the image gallery of the East European Ex Libris page in the Schools of Sacred Art section. (John Kohan)
