Picture in Focus: Crucifixion Scene by Paul-Emile Colin

French Book Illustrator Paul-Emile Colin created this week's unusual Crucifixion scene, recently added to the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection. The small format wood engraving first appeared in a 1925 edition of the collected works of the French Author and Nobel Laureate Anatole France, accompanying the text of his utopian novel, Sur la pierre blanche (On the White Stone). In this fictional philosophical treatise, France surveys the evolution of human civilization down through the ages, culminating in the creation of a truly egalitarian society in the 23rd Century. For France, the Christian era resulted in the destruction of the achievements of Greco-Roman culture, symbolized in this scene by Illustrator Colin of rioting, assault, and arson at the foot of the Crucified Christ. This new Colin wood engraving of Christ on the Cross can be viewed on his profile page in the Sacred Artists section. (John Kohan)
