Picture in Focus: Madonna and Child (After Giotto) by Carl Dixon

Mississippi Visionary Artist Carl Dixon created another new image for the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection, on display this week in his profile page, which takes us into May, a month traditionally devoted to the Virgin Mary. Dixon found inspiration for this mixed media carved wood panel portrait of Mary and the Baby Jesus in a painting of the Madonna and Child by the Great Medieval Italian Artist Giotto, dating from around 1310, which now hangs in the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. Dixon's use of brilliant blue reminds us this color was traditionally associated with Mary in sacred art. The Christ Child offers his mother a white rose, as a symbol of her purity. More new images of the Virgin Mary from my collection will be featured throughout the coming month. (John Kohan)
