Pictures in Focus: Two East European Ex Libris of the Virgin of Tenderness

One of the most venerated icons in the Eastern Orthodox Church is the image of the Virgin of Tenderness, where the Baby Jesus wraps his arm around the neck of the Virgin Mary and rests his cheek against hers. I have two book plate prints on this theme to present this week in my continuing series on new Marian images for the month of May from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection. Russian Graphic Artist Denis Reutow offers us a traditional variation (left) on his homeland's most beloved icon, The Virgin of Vladimir, dating from the 12th century, in his colored wood engraving. Czech Printmaker Raimund Ondracek gives us a modern, free-form version of the Virgin of Tenderness prototype in his lithograph. Both small format prints with this classic image from Byzantine art can be found in the gallery of the East European Ex Libris page in the Schools of Sacred Art section. (John Kohan)
