Pictures in Focus: Two Ex Libris of the Good Shepherd by Czech Artists

During the month of June, when we all long to head off in search green pastures and still waters, I will be featuring new artworks from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection on the much-loved theme of the Good Shepherd. My first two offerings are the work of Czech Graphic Artists, specializing in book plates and small format prints. Zuzana Oberthorova offers us the classic image of the Good Shepherd with the sheep that was lost but now found slung over his shoulders in her color lithograph stripped of any religious trappings. In contrast, Frantisek Burant presents a majestic Christ the Good Shepherd in his expressionistic drypoint (left) with an iconographic halo radiating beams of light, who holds his staff as if it were a kingly scepter.  These two new images of the Good Shepherd from Czechia are now on view in the gallery of the East European Ex Libris page in the Schools of Sacred Art section.
