Picture in Focus: The Black Sheep by Max Hunziker

This week's new image of the Good Shepherd from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection is the work of Swiss Graphic Artist Max Hunziker, who has been described as a "Christian Surrealist" for the way he reveals symbolic meanings through unexpected combinations of images. The new color lithograph joins one already in the gallery of the Hunziker profile page showing a worried shepherd with staff in hand, surveying the horizon for one of his charges that has gone astray amid a wind storm of red and green leaves. It is an image evoking Christ's Parable of the Lost Sheep in Luke 15:3-7 . My current art offering illustrates the happy ending to the biblical story with a few equally dramatic touches. Leaning into a strong wind, the Good Shepherd holds the proverbial black sheep of his flock that was lost and now found securely in his arms as gusts billow his sturdy cloak and shake buds from a bush.
