Picture in Focus: Good Shepherd Mola by an Unknown Kuna Artist

There are few great biblical narratives and symbols of the Christian faith that have not found there way into the embroidery of the Kuna People of the San Blas Archipelago off Panama's Caribbean coast and this month's theme of the Good Shepherd is no exception. The unknown artist of this new reverse applique stitched mola cloth panel in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection has chosen the traditional image of Christ the Good Shepherd returning to the fold with the lost sheep resting on his shoulders, making the animal a curious lime green so it stands out against the background halo. Molas usually include non-identical pairs of images, and we can see two jungle parrots at the top and what appear to be cross-decorated shrubbery at the bottom of this new textile art piece in the gallery of the Molas of the Kuna People page in the Schools of Sacred Art section.
