Picture in Focus: Christ in Gethsemane by Adriana Vasile

We normally think of icons as tempera paintings on wood panels specially prepared with glue and plaster. This week's new piece from the contemporary icon holdings of the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection represents another style of icon-making much favored by folk artists in parts of Central and Eastern Europe because of the cost and availability of the material on which the holy images are made: reverse glass painting. Romanian Artist Adriana Vasile has followed the traditions of this special school of iconography in her image of Christ in Gethsemane, putting in the final details of the piece first on the back of a pane of glass and adding the gold leaf and background coloring last, reversing the usual painting process. The simplified forms, solid colors, and repetitive, patterned markings give this folk art-inspired holy image a surprisingly modernistic look. It can be found on the Romanian glass icons page in the School of Sacred Art section. (John Kohan)
