Artist in Profile: Fikos

As we seek out new icon-makers represented in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection, we will stay on this week in Greece to look at the work of a young iconographer you are more likely to find up a ladder with a paint bucket and brush making street art than hunched over a wooden panel in a studio. Whether working small on icons or huge on multi-storied-building wall murals, Fikos (his artistic nom de plume) sees himself as a practioner of what he calls "Contemporary Byzantine Painting," using the traditional figure prototypes and simplified compositions of this ancient sacred art form to create works both sacred and secular that he believes have universal appeal. Fikos views tradition as a tool rather than a rule book, creating images varying from time-honored iconographic canons in ways you might not immediatey recognize. Four of his icons are now on view in the new Fikos profile page in the Sacred Artists section. (John Kohan)
