Picture in Focus: The Visit of the Wise Men by Carl Dixon

With Christmas only a week and a day away, I have a new Nativity-themed piece from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection to display this Sunday, illustrating the second narrative of the Birth of Christ, found in Matthew 2:12, when seekers of wisdom from outside of Palestine find their way to the Holy Family, guided by a special sign in the heavens. The Visit (or Adoration) of the Magi is a much-loved theme in sacred art down the ages and Mississippi Outsider Artist Carl Dixon gives us a delightful variation in his mixed media on sculpted wood panel painting of the story. The Wise Men bearing gifts for the Christ Child have come from the East with such a large retinue of servants and camels and packhorses they have caused quite a stir in the neighborhood. Their polka-dotted cloaks alone would be the talk of the town! This new image of the Three Kings can be found on the Carl Dixon profile page in the Sacred Artists section. (John Kohan)
