Pictures in Focus: Lithographs of the Flight into Egypt by Karel Oberthor and Zuzana Oberthorova

I have two small format prints from Czechia to display this week, unique in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection. They are color lithograph greeting cards from a father and daughter depicting the Flight into Egypt.  Czech Painter and Printmaker Karel Oberthor offers us a whimsical version of the Holy Family on the road. Joseph holds the flowering staff that marked him out as the Virgin Mary's husband-to-be in non-canonical accounts of the Nativity, while the Madonna and Child ride a spindle-legged horse, a trademark image in Oberthor's art. Karel's daughter, Zuzana Oberthorova, gives us a more traditional view (right) of Joseph, Mary, and the Baby Jesus at rest, a popular motif of Flight into Egypt art, which first appeared in 14th century Northern Europe, emphasizing the humanity of the Holy Family. A tree bends down to offer them its shade and fruit, as recounted in legends of the journey. This special pairing of father-daughter prints can be found in the gallery of the East European Ex Libris page in the Schools of Sacred Art section. (John Kohan)
