Picture in Focus: The Agony in the Garden by Charalambos Epaminonda

As we make our way through the Season of Lent, looking at new works from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collectin, depicting seven moments in the Passion of Christ, my art offering this week from Cypriot Iconographer Charalambos Epaminonda shows Jesus praying in Gethsemane, a theme known in Western religious art as the Agony in the Garden. Epaminonda is a good friend of the collection and this contemporary-styled icon is one of a projected series of commissioned pieces illustrating key manifestations of the humanity and the divinity of Christ in the New Testament. We know from the Gospel accounts of what took place in the Garden of Gethsemane that the human Christ was so troubled by his impending death he sweated drops of blood and prayed the ordeal would pass from him, before ultimately committing himself to the will of God. That decision has just been made in Epaminonda's image. Jesus turns to look at all of humanity before drinking from the chalice of suffering, offered to him by an angel. Although the disciples are sound asleep, the rest of Creation keeps watch--from birds of the air to fish in the sea--anticipating the deliverance of the fallen planet, now made possible by Christ's choice in the Garden. This new icon joins others by Epaminonda on his profile page in the Sacred Artists section. (John Kohan)
