Picture in Focus: The Hope by Konstantin Kalynovych

With the summer season soon upon us, I have selected new images from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection for the month of June on the theme of Psalm 107:23 (KJV): "they that go down to the sea in ships." My first nautically-inspired artwork is another of Russian-Ukrainian Printmaker Konstantin Kalynovych's symbol-laden book plates, depicting two sailing vessels that are not in water at all but on land and in the air. The "hope" of the title is an angel in a sail boat with glowing mast, who has caught a brisk wind in the clouds to come to the aid of a wrecked galleon, landlocked in a grove of trees and chained to a broken barrel. Barking dogs welcome the heaven-sent rescuer. This latest print of angels, dogs, and ships joins other equally enigmatic images in the gallery of the Kalynovych biosketch in the Sacred Artists section. (John Kohan)
