Picture in Focus: Noah and the Ark by Sergey Kirnitskiy

As we continue our survey of nautical-themed images in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection, I have a book plate from Ukraine to show this week, depicting the greatest sea-faring tale of them all: the story of Noah's Ark. In this culture-bending variation from Ukrainian Graphic Artist Sergey Kirnitskiy, Noah appears to have made a far-easterly detour on his way to a landing on Mount Ararat to welcome on board a classic oriental dragon. The text in Chinese lettering in the upper right hand corner, inscribed in English on the bow of the boat is a poetic saying, associated with the Chinese and Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated on the night of the full moon, anytime from late September to early October. A better translation of the text reads: "Wish us a long life to share the beauty of this graceful moonlight, even thousands of miles apart." This color drypoint/mezzotint of the ark and its crew from Kirnitskiy can be found in the gallery of the East European Ex Libris page in the Schools of Sacred Art section. (John Kohan)
