Picture in Focus: Delft Cloisonne Tile for the First Assembly of the World Council of Churches

The universal church appears once more as a ship at sea offering salvation in this week's new artwork from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection, the last nautical-themed piece I have to present for the month of June. It is a glazed tile in the cloisonne style from the famous De Porceleyne Fles earthenware factory in Delft, commemorating the First Assembly of the World Council of Churches in 1948 in Amsterdam, showing the logo of the Christian ecumenical movement. Beneath the Greek word "oikumene," meaning "the inhabited or civilized world," we see a boat with a Cross-shaped mast riding the waves, reminding us of Christ's calling of his first disciples from among the fisherfolk on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, which was also the scene of many of his miracles. This new Delft ceramic piece is now on view in the gallery of the Dutch Cloisonne Tile page in the Schools of Sacred Art Section. The Sacred Art Pilgrim will be setting sail on a voyage of his own during the month of July, returning with new art offerings in August. (John Kohan)
