Picture in Focus: Nativity Triptych by Zhang Wan Long

Chinese artisans at the Dongyang Christian Woodcarving Factory in the coastal province of Zhejiang created this week's new Christmas display from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection, carrying on a folk art tradition, dating back some 1,300 years to the Tang Dynasty. The workshop is the only one of its kind in China, founded by Master Woodcarver Zhang Wan Long, who designed this bas-relief triptych, carved from sapele wood, now on view in the gallery of the Nativity Sets and Scenes page in the Schools of Sacred Art section. The folding panels take the form of ancient city gates. A water buffalo and lambs appear with the Holy Family in the central panel. To the right, an angel announces Christ's birth to the Shepherds; to the left, the Wise Men travel on camels to Bethlehem.  The Christmas Star illuminates all three scenes. The Chinese inscription on the two central pillars of the triptych quotes Isaiah 9:2 (KJV): "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined."
