Week Two: Christ et docteur by Georges Rouault

What better way to launch my 10th anniversary on-line show of Sacred Art Pilgrim acquisitions than with a look back at the artwork that began it all--the oil on paper mounted on canvas painting, Christ et docteur, from 1937 by French Artist Georges Rouault, the unrivalled master of contemporary sacred art!  This powerful image of Christ's nighttime meeting with the doctor of the law, Nicodemus, from the third chapter of John's Gospel, was my first serious art purchase (and still my most expensive!) It proved a worthy cornerstone for my collection, setting guidelines for the works I would seek on future sacred art "pilgrimages." They would be "contemporary" pieces made after 1900--give or take a decade--dealing with the great foundational narratives of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Except for these two boundary markers, I have found a place in my collection for fine art, folk art, outsider art, and decorative and applied art--most of all,  for "art from the heart." This milestone painting by Rouault can be found on his biosketch page in the Sacred Artist listings . It is also the subject of an art reflections piece at my sacred art meditations website.
