Artist in Profile: Bernard Brussel-Smith (1914-1989)

A biographical sketch of American Graphic Artist Bernard Brussel-Smith has just been uploaded in the Sacred Artists section. A student of Wood-Engraver Fritz Eichenberg, Brussel-Smith showed how versatile this demanding art form could be in a variety of book illustrations, advertisements, and fine art pieces. He was drawn to imagery of the Passion of Christ, and nine wood block chiaroscuro prints from a Stations of the Cross cycle can be viewed in the image column of his profile page, along with two variations on the Descent from the Cross. Brussel-Smith joins two other noted wood engravers in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection: Eichenberg and Eric Gill. (John Kohan)
