Week Seventeen: Sonday by William Schickel

On the Sunday when the Eastern Orthodox celebrate Easter this year, I have an image of the Resurrection to present from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection by a Midwestern American artist, whom I had the privilege of meeting shortly before his death at the age of 89 in 2009. William Schickel's eyesight was failing and his hand less steady, when he signed this acrylic panel painting for me, but his depiction of Christ rising from the tomb shows the same bold simplicity of concept that characterizes the best of his works in a decades-long career he once described as the search for “frugal splendor.” The format of the piece suggests Schickel intended it to be one of his “Icons of the Seasons,” altar paintings in four panels, fitted to a cross, which could be changed according to the festivals of the church year. It can be viewed with two other pieces purchased from the artist on the day of my visit to his home in southern Ohio in the William Schickel profile page in the Sacred Artist Section. Christ is Risen! He is risen, indeed! (John Kohan)
