Pictures in Focus: Two Paintings of Christ

During the season of Lent, I will be up-loading new works in the Sacred Art Pilgrim collection about the Passion of Christ to my on-lline galleries. The first two images in this special series are acrylic paintings on canvas board by Visionary Artist Myrtice West. A diptych image of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane shows Jesus in the left panel healing Malchus, the servant of the High Priest, whose ear was cut off by the Apostle Peter in a scuffle with the guards sent to arrest Christ. In the right panel, the bound Christ is led away for trial. There is also a painting of the Crucifixion, the third on this theme in my West collection. The artist has incorporated biblical texts about the events of Good Friday into the composition. While the crowd taunts Jesus to come down from the Cross, he utters his dispairing cry, taken from the opening lines of Psalm 22: "My God, my God, why has thou forsaken me?" (John Kohan)
