Picture in Focus: An Alphabet of Saints by Maria Romero Cash

New artworks continued to find their way to the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection during the past year, when I devoted my weekly What's New section to highlights of my first ten years of art-gathering, so, I am pleased to launch my 2020 on-line art listings with an eclectic sample of these new pieces, different in style and mediums, which will take us up to the beginning of the Lenten season. My first featured work for the new year is a whimsical, painted panel from New Mexican Saint-Maker Marie Romero Cash, An Alphabet of Saints, beginning on the lower left with Saint Andrew for "A" and ending with Saint Zita for"Z," flanked on the top row by the Angels Michael and Raphael and surmounted by the Holy Trinity. These 26 holy men and women often carry identifying emblems like Saint Lucia, who proudly displays her eyes on a plate, either gouged out in martyrdom or removed to discourage suitors. Cash has even found someone for "X," Saint Xantippa, a virgin martyr of Spain! This new work in water-based pigments on gessoed wood joins other pieces in the traditional Southwestern saint-making style on the Marie Romero Cash biosketch page in the Sacred Artists section.
