Picture in Focus: The Book of Psalms by Sandra Bowden

The week's new addition to the on-line Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection is an unusual three-dimensional piece from Massachusetts-based "Word" Artist Sandra Bowden, whose works often explore the visual aspects of the language of sacred texts. In creating The Book of Psalms, Bowden used an open book as her working surface, covering it with raised lettering suggestive of Hebrew script. On the back, she incised the words of Psalm 27 in English into an underlaying surface of encaustic paint. All is covered in layers of gold leaf. Gold has figured prominently in Bowden’s sacred art palette, since she made her first trip to Europe in 1986 and was awed by the gilded altarpieces, icons, and illuminated manuscripts from the Byzantine and Medieval periods. This new 3-D art object in the Bowden profile page gallery is an offshoot of the artist's current traveling exhibition, Reflecting the Glory, composed of gilded encaustic panels and book sculptures that recall iconic works from art history.
