Picture in Focus: The Crucifixion by Marianna Wisnios

Website visitors staying home during Holy Week might want to return to the first image I brought on-line for the Lenten season on February 23 of the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem by Cypriot Iconographer Charalambos Epaminonda and follow Christ's journey to Calvary in subsequent postings, concluding with this new artwork of the Crucifixion for Good Friday by Polish Folk Artist Marianna Wisnios. Born into a poor peasant family, Wisnios made art with whatever materials she could find. Her rustic-styled pieces first caught the eye of an art teacher, who suspected the drawings her son brought to class were the work of a parent. A woman of deep faith, Wisnios created whole series of “rosary” pictures to accompany her daily devotions. In this simple but powerful image, Jesus dies on the Cross against a stylized green field, suggesting new life and the undoing of the curse placed on Eden. The large, mixed media painting, now on view on the Wisnios profile page, arrived at my home in the American Midwest just days before Poland suspended air freight shipments during the pandemic!
