For the next few weeks, I will be presenting images, new and old, from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection of Jesus the Healer. This theme was inspired by a recent photograph of the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro lit up to look like a doctor in blue scrubs and white coat to honor the many health workers around the globe caring for COVID-19 patients. Healing was an important part of Christ's ministry, and the Gospel narratives recount twenty-six instances when he cured the sick, cast out demons, and brought the dead back to life. The first image in the series is a mixed media painting from German-American Illustrator Arthur Ernst Becher based on the opening chapter of the Gospel of Mark, where, in short order, Jesus preaches his first sermon, heals a man with an "unclean spirit," cures the ailing mother-in-law of Peter, and attracts a crowd in need of his restorative touch. This rough sketch of Jesus the Healer can be found on the Arthur Ernst Becher profile page in the Sacred Artists section. (John Kohan)
