Picture in Focus: "Jesus, Son of David, Have Mercy on Me" by Jos Speybrouck

As we continue our series on works from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection depicting the healing ministry of Jesus, my selection for this week is a chromolithograph from Belgian Artist Jos Speybrouck of Christ restoring sight to blind Bartimaeus, recorded in Mark 10:46-52. This is one of four accounts in the Gospels where Jesus helped the blind to see again and a rare instance where the person restored to health is identified by name. Jesus was about to walk pass Bartimaeus on the road to Jericho, when the blind man called out to him, using the words in the title. They would find their way into the liturgy of the Church and inspire the "Jesus Prayer" of Eastern Orthodox devotional practice. Speybrouck reproduces the phrase in Latin at the bottom of this jewel box image of Bartimaeus appealing to Jesus for help. It was used on a poster for Quinquagesima Sunday of the week of Ash Wednesday from a series illustrating the liturgical calendar that Speybrouck created in the 1930s for the Benedictine Abbaye-de-St.-Andre near Bruges in Belgium.(John Kohan)
