Image in Focus: The Raising of Lazarus by Brian Whelan

My series on images of Jesus the Healer in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection comes to an end this week with a painting depicting one of the greatest miracles in the New Testament, the raising of Lazarus from the dead in the eleventh chapter of the Gospel of John. After hearing his close friend, Lazarus, is dying, Jesus delays coming to Bethany until the sick man is already in the tomb. He is greeted with reproachful words from the dead man's two sisters, Martha and Mary, and in one of the shortest and most poignant verses is the Bible, we are told: "Jesus wept (John 11:35)." Christ goes to the tomb, orders the stone rolled away, and brings Lazarus back from the dead, a scene of high drama, portrayed by Irish Artist Brian Whelan in his characteristic style, mixing Celtic and medieval art with a touch of caricature. An impassioned, red-eyed Christ offers consolation to the grieving sisters as he extends his arm, calling the mummy-wrapped Lazarus to come forth. A bystander holding a handkerchief to his nose reminds us Lazarus has been in the grave for four days. (John Kohan)
