Picture in Focus: The Baptism of Christ by Charalambos Epaminonda

For the next two weeks, I will be showing art for the Feast of the Epiphany from the Eastern Churches, where the holy day celebrates the revelation of Christ as the Messiah and second person of the Trinity, when he was baptized by John in the Jordan River. This new icon from the Life of Christ cycle of Cypriot Artist Charalambos Epaminonda follows iconographic conventions in showing the Holy Spirit descending from God the Father upon Christ with the Baptizer and an angel in attendance. The artist enriches the traditional imagery by depicting a dynamic landscape of wind-swept shore reeds and water teeming with fish, reflecting his notion of "Deep Incarnation," the belief that God took on human form to bring redemption to all of creation. The feast day is commemorated on Epaminonda's Mediterrean island home with the Greek Orthodox rite of the "Blessing of the Waters." A priest standing on shore or in a boat, tosses a cross into the sea. The diver who first retrieves it receives a blessing and a white dove is released, symbolizing the descent of the Holy Spirit at the Jordan River epiphany. (John Kohan)
