Cardboard is one of my favorite art materials, so I've long been an admirer of Outsider Artist Rudolph Valentino Bostic and his marvelous painted cardboard panels of the great biblical narratives. During a recent art-hunting trip to the U.S. South, I had a chance to meet Bostic in his home in Savannah, Georgia, and have a look at his attic-studio, lined, row upon row, with paintings. A charmingly unassuming man with a ready laugh, Bostic likes to tell stories as much as paint them and shared a few helpful tips with a fellow cardboard artist. (He gets his bright palette of pastel colors from small house paint sample pots, readily available in any hardware or "do-it-yourself" store!) Of course, I couldn't leave without buying a few new works for the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection. In keeping with our Lenten theme these past few weeks, I've just uploaded two images of Christ Carrying the Cross and the Crucifixion onto the Rudolph Valentino Bostic profile page in the Sacred Artists section. You can read more details about this wonderful artist of faith and his work, gleaned from my visit, in the revised biographical text. (John Kohan)
