Picture in Focus: "I Have a Dream" by Carl Dixon

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. (Martin Luther King Jr.)

In a week when Americans pay tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., I'm reposting a painting by Carl Dixon of the African-American civil rights leader, delivering his inspirational "I Have a Dream" speech to supporters gathered in the nation's capital on August 26, 1963 for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The civil rights activists behind King wear the iconic white cap of Mahatma Gandhi as an emblem of their support for the Indian leader's philosophy of non-violent resistance. Dixon portrays King with a large lapel pin, reminding us that for the artist, "Black History is My History." (John Kohan)
