Artist in Profile: Maurice Denis (1870-1943)

French Artist Maurice Denis is one of the Great Masters of contemporary sacred art, who celebrated his Christian faith in an outpouring of religious imagery only matched in the modern era by his contemporary and compatriot, Georges Rouault. You can now find a Denis profile page in the Sacred Artist sections, presenting the many varied works by this prolific artist of faith in the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection. The gem of my Denis pieces is a simple chalk and graphite drawing of the Madonna in prayer, a study for one of the artist's many paintings of the Annunciation. The Virgin Mary, alone, or with Christ appears in four more lithographs, two woodcuts, and at least, six Denis illustrations for French editions of the Medieval devotional classic, The Imitation of Christ, and the collected poems of English Writer Francis Thompson, all on display in the image gallery. I can think of no better artist to showcase in May, a month devoted to the Virgin Mary, than this splendid modern interpreter of traditional Marian imagery. (John Kohan)
