Picture in Focus: David Defeats Goliath by Carl Dixon

In my series on imagery of David and Goliath in the on-line Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection, a new work on this famous duel from the Hebrew Scriptures has just been added to the extensive gallery of biblical illustrations on the biosketch page of Visionary Mississippi Folk Artist Carl Dixon. While a carrion crow hovers in the sky and the Philistines wave their spears and swords menacingly from the high ground over the battlefield, the Israelite forces, cowering in blue in the lower right, have laid down their arms to await the outcome of the lopsided struggle between the shepherd boy and the giant. Dixon emphasizes the disparity in size between the two by giving Goliath a hugh shield and spear, sufficient to crush David and the whole Israelite army. God clearly has other plans. This whimsical mixed media piece on carved wood panel is a powerful reminder that, whatever the odds, victories come,"not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts (Zechariah 4:6, KJV)."
