Pictures in Focus: Three images of the Virgin Mary by Hermine David

During the month of May, traditionally dedicated to the Virgin Mary, I will be adding new pieces with Marian themes to the on-line collection galleries, beginning with these three prints by French Artist Hermine David, a print-maker particularly devoted to Madonna imagery. One drypoint shows Mary, holding the Christ Child on her lap in a forest setting, while an angel hovers protectively in the background. Mary and the baby Jesus with a ministering angel also appear in a small lithograph, the only print by David in this medium in my collection. A second drypoint depicts the famous 1858 apparition of the Virgin Mary to the peasant gir,l Bernadette Soubirous, in Lourdes, France. (John Kohan)
