The most revered image of the Virgin Mary in Cuba is The Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, a miraculous figurine of the Madonna and Child, rescued from the sea by two brothers and a young slave in the early 1600s, now displayed in a basilica in the old mining town of El Cobre. New Mexican Saint-maker Fernando Bimonte depicts the appearance of the Virgin to the three seafarers in the central panel of a portable altarpiece, which has recently joined the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection and can now be viewed on the Bimonte profile page of the Sacred Artists section. A skilled carpenter, Bimonte made the piece with hinged doors, decorating them on the outside with mixed media images of The Holy Child of Atocha, St. Francis, St. Cecilia, and St. Peter. (John Kohan)
