There is one more sacred folk art treasure to be found in Eastern Europe before we move on to other parts of the globe. We have looked, so far, at artisan pieces on wood, leather, and various types of paper. This week's featured work from the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection is an icon painted on a sheet of glass by Romanian Artist Adriana Vasile. The Bucharest-based painter is keeping alive the traditional craft of reverse glass icon painting, so-named because the holy image is painted onto the back of a glass plate and the usual rules of art-making are reversed. The outlines, the lettering, and finishing details are applied to the glass first with the background coloring and gold leaf added in later layerings, a process that allows for no mistakes! Vasile depicts a scene called the Mystical Winepress, where we see Christ squeezing grapes into a Eucharistic chalice, plucked from a vine growing out of his wounded side, which is entwined on a cross-shaped trellis.
