Pictures in Focus: The Annunciation & Mother of Peace by Rudolph Valentino Bostic

Two new images of the Virgin Mary have been uploaded onto the Rudolph Valentino Bostic profile page in the Sacred Artists section. There is an Annunciation scene of the Angel Gabriel with flower in hand, visiting the Virgin Mary in a garden, recalling traditional images of the event by Bostic's favorite Italian Great Masters. A second painting, titled Mother of Peace, shows the Virgin Mary in half-profile, holding a dove and another bird against a luminous, golden land-and-seascape. It has been painted over a mounted print of birds in a woodland, still visible as shadowy blue forms to the lower right of the central image. Both pieces come with Bostic's trademark outer frames, decorated with smaller images, amplifying the main themes. The green-toned Annunciation is bordered with flowers; table settings, suggesting hospitality and feasting; and white doves of peace. The Mother of Peace image is surrounded by vignettes of Christ's Passion; more doves of peace; portraits, perhaps, of the Disciples; and a Eucharistic chalice and plate of bread. (John Kohan)
