Picture in Focus: The Flight into Egypt by Michael Vargas

This week's featured image of the Flight into Egypt, where we see the Holy Family taking to the road with Salome, the legendary nurse of Jesus, comes from Michael Vargas, who counts among the Hispano saint-makers of the American Southwest. They have revived a form of sacred imagery, dating back to the Spanish Colonial era, when artisans on the northern borders of the empire in present-day New Mexico developed their own style of art copied from holy objects brought from Mexico to meet the local demand for religious artifacts. The simple lines and muted colors of this piece recall holy images from the past, but Vargas differs from modern saint-makers in using oil paint on handmade paper rather than traditional water-based colors on gessoed wood. This art form linked to the descendants of Europeans who made a new life for themselves on the lands of indigenous peoples reminds us of the role immigration has played in the creation of the United States and should make us more mindful of new waves of displaced people seeking entry into the country.
