Picture in Focus: The Flight into Egypt by Brian Whelan

This week's featured work on the Flight into Egypt is a mixed media painting by Brian Whelan, a London-born Irish artist now living in Connecticut. Whelan is known for his unusual renderings of biblical narratives, combining the cosmic with the comic, and his depiction of the post-Christmas story is no exception! Mary and the Baby Jesus are incidental players, in danger of being blown away in the jet stream of the angel who flies before them. Garbed in a fiery-red robe, Joseph is the man-of-the-moment, striding ahead with grim determination, holding the reins of the equally sure-footed donkey in hand. We see him twice in his central role as guardian of the Virgin Mother and Child and in a visual vignette to the left, where the angel warns him in a dream to take his family and flee. As my series on the Flight into Egypt comes to an end, let's continue to remember the millions of modern-day refugees from Ukraine and other wartorn regions of the globe! (John Kohan)
