This month, I will be spotlighting new additions to the Sacred Art Pilgrim Collection from African-American artists. "Masterpiece" is an over-used word in the art world these days, but, occasionally, a picture comes along, which you know will count among an artist's best works. Carl Dixon's painted, carved wood panel, The Life of Christ, is one such a piece. In 23 vignettes, this Mississippi-based, self-taught artist recounts the story of Jesus' life from the Annunciation to his Ascension into Heaven. All the the expected events can be found in Dixon's marvelous mosaic of images: Christ's Nativity, Baptism, Transfiguration, Crucifixion and Resurrection, plus some unexpected additions like the miracle of the miraculous catch of fish, the Parable of the Mustard Seed, and a delightful scene of the Boy Jesus, working in Joseph's carpentry shop. Dixon shows real mastery of detail, composition, and color in this monumental mural now on view in the image gallery of his Sacred Artists profile page. (John Kohan)
